Yoast WooCommerce SEO: Free vs Paid, and a Free Addon
Yoast WooCommerce SEO is Yoast’s paid plugin for online stores. If you’re looking for a free version of it, there isn’t one from Yoast, but you can get most of the way there for free: free Yoast SEO, WooCommerce’s own product schema, and our free Premmerce SEO for WooCommerce addon. This guide shows what each one does on a product page, so you can decide whether the paid plugin is worth it for your store. We tested everything on WooCommerce 11.1 with Yoast SEO 28.6.
What free Yoast SEO does for WooCommerce product pages
Free Yoast SEO works on products the same way it works on posts:
- an SEO title and meta description for each product, set in the Yoast box on the product edit screen
- products and product categories in the XML sitemap
- a canonical URL and Open Graph tags (title, description, image) for social sharing
- Yoast’s schema graph for the page and your site (WebPage, WebSite, and Organization or Person)
What it doesn’t do is treat a product as a product. On a product page, free Yoast SEO sets og:type to article and adds no price or stock information to the Open Graph tags that Facebook, Pinterest and messaging apps read.
WooCommerce already adds product schema
The rich results you see in Google (price, stock status, star ratings) come from Product structured data, and WooCommerce outputs that itself, with or without Yoast. On every product page, WooCommerce adds a Product with its offers (price, currency, availability), its rating and reviews, its SKU, the GTIN from the product’s “GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN” field, and its brand if you use WooCommerce’s built-in Brands.
So a free Yoast SEO store is already eligible for product rich results. What’s missing is smaller: product tags for social sharing, brand data when your brands live somewhere WooCommerce doesn’t look, and the details of your store in your Organization schema.
What the paid Yoast WooCommerce SEO adds
Yoast WooCommerce SEO costs $178.80 a year for one site, before tax (checked on 4 October 2026). According to Yoast, it adds:
- product schema built into Yoast’s graph, with price, availability, ratings and identifiers
- product sitemaps that leave out cart, checkout and filter pages
- breadcrumbs
- product details such as brand, color and material in the structured data
- everything in Yoast SEO Premium, including AI-written titles and descriptions and a redirect manager
If you want all of that in one plugin with Yoast’s support behind it, it’s a reasonable choice, and the redirect manager alone is useful on a store that renames products. If you only need product pages to be read as products, the free route below covers it.
The free route: Yoast SEO plus Premmerce SEO for WooCommerce
Premmerce SEO for WooCommerce (WooCommerce SEO Addon on our product page) is a free plugin we make for exactly this gap. When Yoast SEO is active, it switches to a compatibility mode: Yoast keeps control of titles, descriptions, canonicals and sitemaps, and the addon only adds what Yoast leaves out.
With Yoast SEO active, it adds:
- Product Open Graph tags. It sets
og:typetoproductand adds the price, currency, stock status and SKU, so a shared product link shows as a product. - Brand in the product schema. Choose the taxonomy that holds your brands, and the addon adds it to WooCommerce’s Product schema. You need this if your brands are an attribute, or come from a plugin such as Premmerce Brands for WooCommerce. WooCommerce’s built-in Brands are added already.
- Store details in your Organization schema. Your address, email, phone, opening hours and accepted payments go into the Organization that Yoast outputs on your homepage.
- Image alt text. Product images with no alt text get the product’s title.
This is the output on a product page in our test store, with both plugins active:
<meta property="og:type" content="product" />
<meta property="og:price:amount" content="16" />
<meta property="og:price:currency" content="USD" />
<meta property="product:availability" content="instock" />
<meta property="product:retailer_item_id" content="woo-cap" />
The addon’s own Twitter Cards, canonical and prev/next links and its Indexing tab only run when Yoast SEO isn’t installed. With Yoast active, Yoast handles those, even though the options still show on the addon’s settings screen.
How to set it up
- Install and activate WooCommerce and Yoast SEO.
- In Yoast SEO, go to Settings > Site representation and choose Organization, with your store’s name and logo. The addon adds your store details to this Organization, so Yoast has to output one.
- Go to Plugins > Add New, search for “Premmerce SEO for WooCommerce”, then install and activate it. If it asks you to opt in to updates and usage data, Skip is fine: the plugin works the same either way.
- Open SEO > Settings (the addon’s menu, separate from Yoast’s). Mode should say “Yoast SEO”. Open Graph and schema.org under Markup are on by default. If your brands aren’t WooCommerce’s built-in Brands, pick their taxonomy under Brand, then save.

- Open the Info tab and fill in your store’s address, email, phone, opening hours and accepted payment methods, then save.

- Check the result. Open a product page, view its source and search for
og:type: it should sayproduct. Then run the page through Google’s Rich Results Test to see the Product schema, and the homepage to see your Organization details.

More product SEO for WooCommerce
Schema is one part of product SEO. The other parts are in our guides:
- The best WooCommerce SEO plugins, compared, if you’re choosing between Yoast and the alternatives.
- Clean product URLs: Premmerce Permalink Manager for WooCommerce removes
/product/and/product-category/from your URLs and sets up the 301 redirects, and it works with Yoast SEO (breadcrumbs and sitemaps follow the new URLs). - The best permalink structure for WooCommerce, if you’re deciding what those URLs should be.
